  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from WaNana -- Patrick Taylor's stories bring joy to our household. : We've been reading aloud the Irish Country series for years... own all 16 books. When telling others about this series, I've compared it to James Herriot's All Creatures Great and Small...except that the doctors care for humans rather than animals. Taylor brings to life charming, enticing characters; environment descriptions that "take you there"; relationships in the community that are utterly believable. We hope Taylor will never stop writing this series, unrealistic to be sure but addictions are hard to break! This is a healthy addiction. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2021 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from boguman -- So disappointed... : I love Mr. Taylor's books. My favorite part is sitting down to read and getting engrossed in a story that takes me away for a few hours. I feel part of that litte Irish village. I know the people and feel like I want to be their friend. I know how pathetic that sounds. With this book, I felt cheated. The book itself is tiny and the story is very short. It was finished well before an hour and a half had passed. From now on, I'll read the description. It can't be easy writing these stories, but I was crushed when I saw this book. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Joan Casey -- Christmas traditions : This book brought back wonderful memories of childhood Christmases with my own English family. The traditions are the same. The simplicity of the celebrations in Ballybucklebo and the joy felt by the participants brought tears to my eyes. The story of preserving little Jill’s faith in Santa was especially moving. I love that Arthur Guinness and Lady Macbeth share in the festivities and that Kinky, Archie and Barry Laverty are part of the family. And I especially love the care and kindness shown by and to everyone. Thank you for a great read. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Silvia Reader of mysteries -- Read on pleasure : As always, magnificent story. I laughed and I cried. Mr. Taylor tells a wonderful story that brings you in to enjoy. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Anne R. Marshall -- Nostalgia for a simpler time. : An Irish Country Yuletide by Patrick Taylor is an entertaining throwback to an earlier era when country doctors called on their patients when necessary. Doctor Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly lives with his wife, Kitty, with whom he had been in love many years before, but had only recently married, and their housekeeper, Mrs. Kincaid (Kinky). Kinky was a little fey but a lovely cook. The all lived happily together with Kitty who still commuted to Belfast where she carried on her work as a nurse. This is pretty much a slice-of-life novel, which puts me in mind of Acorn TV's Dr. Finlay, although that takes place in Scotland. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from CJ-MO -- 4.5 stars - Longer novella perfect for both new readers and fans of the series : It’s December 1965 and everyone in Ballybucklebo, Ireland is getting ready for Christmas. Dr. Fingal O’Reilly is looking forward to spending it with his wife, Kitty, and his young colleague Dr. Barry Laverty is back in town to work and also to celebrate the holidays with his girlfriend, Sue. However, a couple things are putting a damper on the holidays for some families. The black sheep of a prominent family in town comes home from Australia for the first time in many years because of a grim medical diagnosis he has received. In addition, a chicken pox epidemic is spoiling Christmas for several of the young ones in the village. Fingal and Barry, with the help of some good friends, do what they can to help everyone they can to have as wonderful of a holiday as they are anticipating. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Libby Bergstrom -- A comforting Christmas read : As comforting as a BBC holiday special, I was quickly drawn into the everyday dramas of a small North Ireland village in the 1960s. Perfect reading for a snowy December evening. While this is the 16th book in the series, it's the first I've read. It won't be the last. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2021 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Greentimbers -- The book is very small in size, not what I expected ! : This book is very small in size. I have all of the other novels in hardcover and it is not the same at all. It looks stupid sitting on the shelf with all of the other books in the series. And another thing about it, the dust cover feels like it is made of some type of plastic, whereas all of the others have a nice paper jacket. Very disappointed with the physical aspects of this book. I can't comment on the content as I have not read it yet. ( Reviewed in Canada on October 14, 2021 )
